Darlene Necan Walks for awareness of Nuclear Waste storage in Treaty 3

Darlene Necan, Ojibway of Saugeen Nation is walking from Ignace, to the proposed Nuclear Waste Storage Facility in Treaty 3 territory.

SIOUX LOOKOUT – Darlene Necan is on the road again. With a small team of supporters, Necan, and Ojibway grandmother and water protector has already passed through Sioux Lookout, Savant Lake and Sandbar Lake on her journey to raise awareness about the proposed nuclear waste repository in Ignace, Ontario. The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) has already begun drilling bore holes in the area and is evaluating the site as a storage facility. Before non-natives moved into Ignace, the area was home to Necan’s family.

To maintain social distancing Necan is only walking with a small crew and a support vehicle. Many photos of her trip are available on her Facebook page and in the gallery below. The walk will take several days with Necan and her supporters conducting ceremony and visiting key sites along the way. Recently, they passed by Necan’s cabin which she built in Savant Lake over the opposition of the MNR.

The walk is designed to bring awareness to the issue of Nuclear Waste Storage in Northeastern Ontario. Necan and her supporters are concerned about the impact the Ignace and other nuclear projects will have on the pristine ecosystem of their Territory.
