Rachel Thevenard Runs Down Line 9
CORNWALL, ON. Rachel Thevenard has been running to draw attention to the reversal of Enbridge’s controversial Line 9 pipeline. Rachel started her run in Sarnia on Dec 4th, 2015 and when we spoke to her on January 2nd she was in Cornwall Ontario.
Rachel is running to draw attention to the fact that the indigenous communities along the route of the pipeline were not consulted about the reversal of pipeline flow through their territories. The fact that highly abrasive bitumen from the Alberta Tar Sands is being pumped through the aging pipeline means that it is a matter of when, not if there is a major pipeline rupture.
The issue is of interest to all people that drink the water of the Great Lakes – 20% of the worlds supply of fresh water, but for Rachel the issue ultimately boils down to colonialism. Rachel speaks about how she’s doing physically, what led her to take this unprecedented action, and what her views are on the legitimacy of the Canadian state.
