Echaquan’s health had been affected by ailments caused by colonial encroachment on her people’s lifeways. In a phone interview held on Thursday with Real People’s Media, family friend Chantal Chartrand reported that Echaquan attended the Emergency department on Saturday, Sept. 26th to seek treatment for stomach pains, and that by Monday, Sept. 28th, she was dead.
Over 25 people gathered in front of the Six Nations Police Department (SNPD) HQ in Ohsweken on Friday to demand that their officers wear body cameras, take drug tests and conduct a community policing survey. Supporters and critics of MHC disagree strongly about Macdonald’s legacy and what honouring him with public memorials says about us. After learning that there’s no evidence for the truth of the main event depicted in MHC, I hope that some of its supporters will share in a reconsideration of the statue’s place in our community.
